Architectural Photography: Montreal

A Creative Journey

An immersive long weekend exploring Montreal’s architecture through a photographer’s eye—old and new, ornate and restrained—guided by a professional photographer with an emphasis on seeing, composition, and light.

Thursday–Sunday (3 nights / 4 days)

Day 0 — Thursday | Arrival & Orientation

Arrival in Montreal
Guests arrive independently and check into the hotel (Old Montreal or Plateau recommended).

Late Afternoon: Welcome Walk (Optional)
A gentle orientation walk through the immediate neighborhood:

  • noticing scale

  • materials

  • rhythm of streets

  • first impressions of light and form

No cameras required—this is about seeing before shooting.

Evening: Welcome Dinner
A relaxed group dinner at a local bistro.
Introductions, overview of the weekend, and a brief conversation about:

  • how architects think

  • how photographers translate structure into image

  • what not to worry about this weekend

Day 1 — Friday | Old Montreal: Form, Detail & Time

Morning: Architectural Foundations Walk
Old Montreal is ideal for learning:

  • symmetry vs. asymmetry

  • texture and material

  • scale and proportion

  • how age shows itself in buildings

Focus areas:

  • stone facades

  • doorways and thresholds

  • window repetition

  • light on masonry

Instruction is hands-on and optional—participants can shoot, observe, or both.

Lunch: On Your Own (Nearby Café Suggestions Provided)

Afternoon: Notre-Dame & Old Port Perspectives
Shifting from detail to presence:

  • wide shots

  • vertical lines

  • framing monumental buildings without distortion

  • working with crowds without photographing people

Late Afternoon: Independent Shooting Time
Participants revisit one area that resonated most, applying what they’ve learned.

Evening: Dinner on Your Own
Encouraged to walk and notice night lighting and reflections.

Day 2 — Saturday | Contrast: Brutalism, Modernism & Staircases

Morning: Downtown Modern & Brutalist Montreal
A focused exploration of:

  • concrete

  • repetition

  • shadow

  • negative space

This is where architectural photography becomes graphic and abstract.

Topics explored:

  • composition with minimalism

  • using contrast intentionally

  • letting buildings feel emotional, not just documented

Lunch: Group Lunch (Optional, Casual)

Afternoon: Plateau Mont-Royal Staircases & Residential Rhythm
Iconic exterior staircases offer lessons in:

  • leading lines

  • repetition

  • storytelling through form

  • photographing residential architecture respectfully

This portion feels lighter, playful, and very “Montreal.”

Late Afternoon: Review & Conversation
An informal group conversation (not critique-heavy):

  • what surprised you

  • what you’re noticing differently

  • how your eye has changed

No pressure to share images.

Evening: Closing Dinner
A celebratory final dinner—reflective, unhurried, and warm.

Day 3 — Sunday | Integration & Departure

Morning: Final Walk or Coffee + Observation
A short optional walk focused on:

  • light

  • framing

  • slowing down

This is about integrating skills into how you travel, not just how you photograph.
