Chautauqua Gran Fondo — Aug 2023

In August 2023, I took part in the Chautauqua Gran Fondo, a fully supported cycling event that loops around the beautiful lake region of Chautauqua County. It wasn’t a race — it was a community ride, with cyclists of all ages and experience levels coming together to enjoy the scenery, the challenge, and the shared experience of being out on the road.

Before the ride, I checked into the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in Jamestown, a gorgeous, modern hotel set right along the waterfront. My room overlooked the lake, and the entire property felt upscale and peaceful — walking paths along the water, firepits, Adirondack chairs, a stunning patio, and floor-to-ceiling views of Chautauqua Lake. It was the perfect place to relax before the big ride and soak in the feeling of being on a little summer getaway. I had lunch in the bar and ran into one of the Chefs from my bank who was staying for the weekend with his girlfriend at the hotel. It is really a small world.

The next morning, I headed to Mayville Lakeside Park for the ride start. The Gran Fondo offered several distance options — 20, 25, 40, 60, and 100 miles — each with well-marked routes, stocked rest stops, scenic overlooks, and a fun festival atmosphere. The energy at check-in was buzzing: hundreds of riders, volunteers, music, colorful jerseys, and sunshine over the water.

Once on the road, the beauty of the region really showed itself. Long stretches of lake views, quiet rural roads, vineyards, historic sites, and shady forest sections made the ride feel immersive and energizing. Rest stops along the way had everything from cold water to snacks to encouraging volunteers.

At the end of the ride, everyone gathered back at Lakeside Park for a lakeside party — wood-fired pizza, cold drinks, music, and a community celebration that capped off the day perfectly.

The Chautauqua Gran Fondo supports several local organizations, including the Bemus Point–Stow Ferry and Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue. Riding with a purpose made the whole experience even more meaningful.

🌟 What This Adventure Meant to Me

Bike Touring is an awesome hobby, I love being active, exploring new and scenic places, and pushing myself physically. The lake, the community energy, and the beautiful hotel stay made it feel like both a fitness milestone and a mini-vacation rolled into one.
